The gavel was judged by the Guinness Book of World Records on September 28, 2019 and was given the official word, that it is in fact the World's Largest Gavel!
The gavel was created by the creator of the world’s largest items in Casey, Illinois and will honor those that have gone before as well as those that are to come in the name of justice. The gavel is 36” in diameter, 61” height, and 16’6” in length and made of Red Oak.
The Clark County Courthouse has a rich history of well-known historical figures practicing law there. The most famous was Abraham Lincoln. He was a frequent visitor of Marshall during his circuit riding days and developed some lifelong friendships in the town. Col. William B. Archer was a member of the Illinois delegation to the 1856 Republican National Convention and addressed the group following Lincoln’s nomination for vice-president on the William C. Fremont ticket.
Abraham Lincoln defended William D. Davis at Clark County Courthouse in Marshall on July 1st and 2nd in 1850.
